This is a brief update to field management on recent decisions about
operating systems and our Motorola 68K installed base. As you will
remember about a year ago we transferred responsibility of the Domain
operating system to WCSO Software Technology Division, in order to
insure our ability to provide continued support of that technology to
our customers. With similar motivations we have decided to move the
Motorola 68K versions of HP-UX to WCSO Software Technology Division as
well. In both cases this should be largely transparent to our
customers and really represents an internal organizational decision.
What will this mean to your customers?
* They can count on support of HP-UX and Domain on the Motorola 68K
platforms through the year 2000.
* Additional enhancements, bug fixes and features will largely be
driven through support contract revenues.
* HP is committed to provide interoperability between 68K HP-UX,
Domain and future releases of PA-RISC HP-UX.
This also means that there will never be a better time for customers to
begin their move to PA-RISC than now, when HP-UX is identical on both
platforms and we have technical solutions and economic incentives for
our customers to move to PA-RISC HP-UX. As I write this we are rolling
out a world wide campaign for the Open Migration Program (OMP) to help
our customers understand what this means in detail, and to give them
the incentives to begin their move now.
In the mean time, we will continue to strive for balance between
providing our customers long term stable environments, and making
investments to stay competitive in the quite difficult workstation
market. Expect to see press, advertising, customer pieces and on-going
activity demonstrating our commitment to our installed customer base.
We recognize that these are the people who built this business.
To this end HP-UX and Domain operating system support is available to
our customers through the year 2000. Additional information on support
can be obtained by contacting Bev Raines at WCSO Software Technology
Division in Fort Collins.
If you have concerns, or need our help in solving customer migration
problems, my Installed Base Team stands ready to help in any way.
Thanks for your continued efforts in maintaining world class
satisfaction (and making our numbers).
Best regards,
Karl Freund,
Manager Installed Base Team/Workstation Systems Group
